I have a PCI SATA card and a spare 60GB Kingston SSD that will be going into the MDD.
#ATX POWER SUPPLY FOR MAC G4 MDD MAC#
Both the G5s I got back in March! But I will set this mac up on my desk next to my hackintosh and use it for PowerPC stuff. So plans for this Mac? Well now it is my highest clocked PowerPC, I gutted one of my G5 towers for a hackintosh case and traded my Dual Core G5 for 8GB of DDR3 and a 120GB SSD still in the original packaging. Owell, spare fans if I ever buy a noisy MDD! The evening before I bought the MDD I went on ebay and bought 2x 80mm fans to swap out in the PSU to find out the next day this thing was pretty quiet and I didn’t need to swap them. Suprisingly enough the Samsung power supply in this MDD is really quiet and I can stand it.

One of my first posts on this blog talked about swapping the fans on my dual 1GHz MDD back in February 2014. Step by step instructions for using an ATX 24-pin power supply in a Gigabit Ethernet/Digital Audio Powermac G4 (one way to do it anyway): First, know that to boot the G4s up, you MUST have at least +12V of power going to the G4s pin 22 spot (white wire) even with the computer turned off.

When people think of the MDD they think of “windtunnel” due to the three fans being crazy loud. In terms of other specs, it has 2GB of Ram, 60GB Seagate HD, 64MB nVidia GeForce 4MX, SuperDrive, and an AirPort Extreme card. If I end up keeping this it will turn into a dual 1.25 or 1.42GHz. The only bummer is that the system bus runs at 133MHz not 166MHz but I’m not complaining. Works really good and I even get 1MB of 元 per CPU. 800MHz? Well this machine was originally a FireWire 800 single 1GHz model that the guy swapped a 800MHz dual processor card into this thing which came out of a 2001 QuickSilver. So something seems odd in the title of this post. Picked it up on 8/3/15 on my lunch break from work. The guy wanted $40 and I ended up paying $30 for it. I also picked up a 500MHz iMac G3 Snow White from a guy on there (owned it for about 3 days, I’ll post on that later too) but there was this MDD on there. I’ll post more on that iMac soon but for now it’s all about this odd MDD!Įvery once in a while on a local buy/sell Facebook group in my local area someone lists a Mac. Here I go with another G4! I also picked up my old 800MHz iMac G4 just over a week ago. A spare computer power supply is a good and very cheap solution. I needed a laboratory power supply that gives me a lot of power (more than 100W) at stabilized 12V.

Many such G4 power supplies become free by installing the anti-noise kits from Apples exchange program. The power supply is pushed against the side of the G4 opposite the door. A completed 400 Watt power supply made from a spare dual G4 mac power supply. Mini and Micro-ATX supplies are available, but you'll still have similar mounting and clearance issues. That is standard for a regular ATX power supply. I don't have spare a CPU board to try at the moment though.Īlso, the logic board has some wires and SMD transistors soldered on, apparently to control one of the fans, and it also has two large resistors bridging some pins on the power supply connector on the bottom side, probably to force some load on the power supply… Some photos on twitter.Ahh. The power supply I'm using is 6' wide (as viewed from the front of the G4), 3.5' tall and 5.5' deep. I noticed the thermal paste was quite tried off, maybe one of the CPUs partially burnt and fails to execute code. But when I put it back in, and I tried many combinations, it just sits here, not doing any sound. One very odd thing is, when I remove all the RAM, it does give a single beep, telling it doesn't find it.

disconnecting unessential things (I noticed the optical drives IDE cable had wires cut). When removing the PRAM battery I had the feeling it actually was in the wrong polarity, but I'm not entirely sure.įans spin, the power LED lights up, but that's it. I was just given a G4 MDD which "stopped working suddenly".
